History of the Birthday cape

The Birthday cape first turned up on April 30, 2021 on Gr8Bizzo, an account the Minecraft Wiki links to a Mojang Studios employee. A Mojang staffer said on Twitter that the account's owner was leading the work on minecraft.net, and joked that maybe he was just really into birthday parties. No official reason was ever given, and nobody knows whether April 30 was the real grant date.

The cape is older than that. Marc Watson said in January 2022 that he thought it was one of the capes in the customer support tool from long ago, and the texture file on Mojang's server carries an embedded timestamp from October 2015.

Design

Deep blue with red and green shapes near the top and cream, pink and gold details lower down.

Birthday cape FAQ

How do you get the Birthday cape?

You can't. The only known Birthday cape sits on Gr8Bizzo, an account the Minecraft Wiki ties to a Mojang Studios employee who led work on minecraft.net. Mojang never said why it was given, and it was never offered to players.
