History of the Cobalt cape

Cobalt, from Oxeye Game Studio, was made in partnership with Mojang. Like Scrolls before it, it used a Minecraft cape as a competition prize. On February 10, 2016 jeb_ pointed out that, as with Scrolls, the Cobalt tournament had Cobalt capes for Minecraft in its prize pool.

The cape came through Cobalt's own events, not through Minecraft. Besides the Cobalt League tournaments, the Cobalt Workshop Challenge ran three level-building contests on Steam in spring 2016. The Challenge #3 rules promised each category winner a redeemable cape code that could be passed to someone else. In the final results on April 13, 2016, one creator took all three categories.

According to minecraft.wiki, the elytra texture is modelled on the wasp enemy from Cobalt.

Design

According to minecraft.wiki, jeb_ confirmed the elytra version shows the wings of the wasp, an insect enemy from Cobalt.

How do you get the Cobalt cape?

You had to win a Cobalt competition in 2016. Prizes came from the Cobalt League tournaments and the Cobalt Workshop Challenge map contests on Steam, where each category winner got a redeemable Minecraft cape code. The contests ended in April 2016, so it can no longer be earned.

Can you still get the Cobalt cape?

No. The Cobalt Workshop Challenges ran from February to April 2016, and the Cobalt League tournaments also took place in early 2016. minecraft.wiki records no later competitions that handed out the cape.
