History of the MineCon 2011 cape
MINECON 2011 was Mojang's first official convention. It took place at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on November 18, 2011, the same day Minecraft left beta with the release of Java Edition 1.0.0.
In September 2011 Mojang announced that attendees would get an exclusive "cloak" and opened a public poll with five designs. The red creeper option won with around 42% of the vote. Notch later switched the in-game term from cloak to cape.
According to the Minecraft Wiki, ticket holders saw the cape on their accounts in October 2011, a few weeks before the show. It became the first cape a regular player could obtain, and the runner-up design came back a year later as the MineCon 2012 cape. The creeper layout returned once more in gold as the Founder's cape.
Design
A green creeper face on red cloth. Players picked this layout in a 2011 community vote over four other designs.

MineCon 2011 cape FAQ
How do you get the MineCon 2011 cape?
You had to buy a ticket to MINECON 2011, the first official Minecraft convention, held at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Mojang attached the cape to each ticket holder's registered account. There was no other way to earn it on Java Edition.
Can you still get the MineCon 2011 cape?
No. The cape was tied to MINECON 2011 tickets, and the Minecraft Wiki reports that Mojang disabled every unused MINECON cape code on May 12, 2020. Mojang has not announced any plan to hand it out again.
Why does the MineCon 2011 cape have a creeper on it?
Mojang posted five cloak designs in September 2011 and let the community vote. The red creeper design won with about 42% of the votes. The blue pickaxe design that came second was later reused for the MINECON 2012 cape.
