History of the Spade cape
MrMessiah made BetterLight, an early Minecraft mod that changed how lighting and grass looked. The Minecraft Wiki says features from it later made their way into the game, and that Mojang gave him this cape to say thanks.
The cape was discussed back in 2011 but wasn't granted until 2015, and the exact date isn't known. Who drew it isn't recorded either. MrMessiah himself guessed it might have been Jeb.

Spade cape FAQ
How do you get the Spade cape?
Nobody can earn it. Mojang gave the Spade cape to the modder MrMessiah as thanks for his BetterLight mod. It was talked about as early as 2011 but, according to the Minecraft Wiki, only landed on his account in 2015. It was never offered to other players.
Can you still get the Spade cape?
No. The Spade cape is a personal thank-you to one modder, MrMessiah. Mojang has not released it to anyone else, and there is no event, purchase or launcher reward that unlocks it.
