As of Minecraft: Java Edition snapshot 23w05a, armor trims can be applied to leather armor! The leather armor pieces can of course already be dyed with Minecraft’s 16 dye colors, so now along with all the possible trim materials & patterns on top of that, there is now an unprecedented amount of customisation possible with leather caps, tunics, pants, and boots!

A little-known fact of leather armor is that you can actually craft them with multiple dyes at once, even multiple of the same dye. This allows you to blend colors together in your leather armor design. Especially with commands, pieces of leather armor have full access to all 16.7 million possible 24-bit colors. Along with the 10 possible trim patterns and 11 trim materials, that means there are now over 1.8 billion possible ways to customize every piece of leather armor!

Leather armor can be dyed either before or after being trimmed, and a cauldron of water can be used to reset the dye color.

The smithing templates used to apply armor trims still require 7 diamonds to duplicate in the crafting table however, so it is unfortunately very pricey to create trimmed armor in survival mode, even for leather armor.
