Changing your Minecraft skin takes about two minutes. The steps differ between Java and Bedrock, and console players have a third route of their own. We cover all three below, plus how to preview a skin before you commit to it.
Quick answer
Java Edition
- Sign in at your Minecraft profile page on minecraft.net.
- Open Skins, then choose Add Skin (or edit the classic/slim default).
- Upload a 64×64 PNG and pick the Classic or Slim arm model.
- Save. The skin syncs to any launcher signed into that account.
The new skin can take a few minutes to show up in-game. If the client is still behind, restart it.
Bedrock Edition
Open the Dressing Room (the hanger icon) from the main menu and pick a skin, or tap the blank slot to import a PNG. Bedrock also sells skin packs on the Marketplace, and those apply the moment you buy them.
Where to find skins
You can browse and preview skins in Crafty's skin library without downloading anything. It's the easiest way to see how a skin looks in 3D before you apply it. While you're here, you can look up any recipe in the crafting guide too.
FAQ
Why isn't my new skin showing up?
Skin changes go through Mojang's servers and can take 5 to 10 minutes. If the old skin is still there after that, fully close the game and open it again.
Can I use the same skin on Java and Bedrock?
Not automatically. The two editions use separate accounts and separate skin systems. You can upload the same PNG to both, you just have to do it in each place.
Do custom skins cost anything?
No. Uploading your own PNG is free on both Java and Bedrock. Only Marketplace skin packs on Bedrock cost money.
