Minecraft stopped shipping one big update a year and moved to drops, and the version numbers changed with it. 26.1 is the first drop of 2026, 26.2 is the second, and a third digit means a hotfix. We keep the whole 26.x cycle on this one page instead of writing a post per patch, so you can see what each drop added, what it broke and what it did to the crafting data Crafty regenerates on every release. When 26.3 ships, it goes here too.
The 26.x cycle at a glance
Crafty's crafting and item datasets were last regenerated against 26.2, and every recipe page prints the exact date at the bottom.

How the new version numbers work
Since 26.1, Java Edition versions follow year.drop.hotfix. The year is the two-digit calendar year, the drop counts up from 1 within that year, and the hotfix digit only appears when a patch ships between drops. So 26.1.1 is the first hotfix to the first drop of 2026. It plays on 26.1 servers, because hotfixes keep the protocol compatible. There is no 1.22. The 1.x numbering ended with 1.21.11.
Two technical changes came with the numbering. 26.1 is the first release that requires Java 25, so an older launcher-bundled runtime won't start it. It's also the first release shipped without name obfuscation, which is why mod loaders updated faster than usual this cycle.
26.1 Tiny Takeover
The theme was baby mobs. Before 26.1 almost every baby was a scaled-down adult. Now nearly all of them have their own model and texture, and cats, chickens, horses, pigs and wolves get their own sounds too. Baby axolotls play dead. Baby villagers are built from a base model with a biome overlay, so their proportions finally match across biomes. Saddles and armor no longer render on baby pigs, camels and wolves.
The gameplay additions:
- Golden dandelion. A dandelion surrounded by eight gold nuggets, also sold by wandering traders. Feed one to a baby mob and it stops aging until you feed it another. It's the first way to keep a baby permanently without commands.
- Name tags are craftable. Name tags were dungeon-chest loot for fifteen years, and 26.1 finally gave them a recipe. The name tag recipe page has the grid. It uses paper and an iron ingot.
- Trumpet sound. Goat horns placed on copper get a trumpet sound that changes with the copper's oxidation stage.
On the crafting side, this drop added the golden dandelion and name tag recipes and updated the baby armor textures that render on the item ID pages.
26.1.1 hotfix
26.1.1 came out on 1 April 2026, one week after 26.1, with a single fix. Chat messages couldn't be reported while chat was enabled (MC-307140). There were no content changes and no data pack or resource pack format change, and it connects to 26.1 servers. It matters mostly as the first hotfix under the new numbering, and it set the pattern that hotfixes stay tiny and compatible.
26.2 Chaos Cubed
The second drop added a new underground biome and a mob to go with it, plus two platform features that matter more than they sound.
Sulfur caves. A cave biome with bands of yellow sulfur and red cinnabar, hot springs that vent toxic gas, and geysers that erupt from potent sulfur pools and launch anything standing on them. Sulfur and cinnabar both come as full building families, each with a base block, polished, bricks, chiseled, and stairs, slabs and walls. That's the biggest single batch of building blocks since the copper family, and it accounts for most of the new crafting recipes in 26.2.
Sulfur cubes. A passive, bouncing mob that jumps like a slime and absorbs a block you give it, taking on that block's properties. Give it a slime block and it bounces higher. Give it something heavy and it sits still, and you can knock it around like a ball. Small cubes grow into large ones when fed slimeballs. There's a bucket of sulfur cube and a spawn egg.
Friends list. Java Edition gained a friends system. You get a button above Options, friend requests, an online status you can set, in-game notifications, and direct peer-to-peer connections to a friend's world without opening to LAN or running a server.
Vulkan renderer. An experimental Vulkan 1.2 renderer with OpenGL fallback, plus a reversed depth buffer that fixes distant z-fighting. It's off by default. Turn it on in video settings if your GPU supports Vulkan and you want to help Mojang test it.
Among the smaller changes, beds and signs stopped being entities and are block models now, which helps performance in bed-heavy builds. Entities also gained bounciness, friction and air-drag attributes that data packs can set. And there's a new music disc, "Bounce" by fingerspit.
What changed in the crafting data
Every drop gets regenerated into Crafty's datasets, and the crafting guide title carries the version it was built from. Across 26.1 and 26.2, these changed:
Version-suffixed searches like "name tag recipe 26.2" resolve to the current recipe page, which is why the pages carry the version in their titles.
Should you update a server?
Move from 26.1 to 26.1.1 right away. It's a safety fix with no compatibility cost. For 26.2, check your plugins first. The drop changed how beds and signs are represented, and that affected several world-editing and protection plugins. And because 26.1 introduced the Java 25 requirement, hosts still on Java 21 images can't run either drop. If you're picking a host, the free server hosting guide covers what to check.

FAQ
What is the latest Minecraft version?
Java Edition 26.2, Chaos Cubed, released 16 June 2026, is the current release. Bedrock follows the same year-drop numbering and shipped its 26.2 in the same window. A 26.3 drop is expected, but there's no announced date or snapshot content yet. We'll add it to this page once there is.
Why did Minecraft change from 1.21 to 26.1?
Mojang switched to year.drop.hotfix numbering with the first drop of 2026 so the version tells you when it shipped and where it sits in the year. The 1.x scheme ended at 1.21.11. The number itself changed nothing about the game. 26.1 is simply the release after 1.21.11.
Does Minecraft 26.2 need a new Java version?
The Java 25 requirement arrived with 26.1 and applies to 26.2 as well. The official launcher bundles the right runtime, so most players won't notice. Server owners on a custom Java install or a hosting image pinned to Java 21 have to upgrade before either drop will start.
What is in the sulfur caves?
Bands of sulfur and cinnabar blocks, hot springs that release toxic gas, geysers that erupt from potent sulfur and launch entities, and sulfur cube mobs. Both block types come with polished, brick and chiseled variants plus stairs, slabs and walls, all craftable. The biome generates underground in the Overworld.
