How crafting works in Minecraft

Crafting turns ingredients into a new item by arranging them in a grid. There are two grids: the 2×2 one in your inventory, and the 3×3 one you get from a crafting table. Minecraft 26.2 has 972 craftable items, and every one of them is made in one of those two grids or at one of the stations below.

The two crafting grids

The 2×2 grid is always with you — open your inventory and it sits next to your character. It makes anything whose pattern fits in two-by-two: planks, sticks, torches, and the crafting table itself.

The 3×3 grid needs a crafting table. It makes everything the 2×2 grid does, plus every recipe that needs a three-wide pattern — tools, armour, beds, boats, brewing stands. A 2×2 pattern still works inside a 3×3 grid, and it does not matter which corner you use.

Shaped and shapeless recipes

A shaped recipe cares about arrangement. A pickaxe is three heads along a row with two sticks below the centre — move a stick and you get nothing. The shape can sit anywhere in the grid, but it has to hold its shape.

A shapeless recipe only cares that the right ingredients are present. Dyes, mushroom stew and firework stars work wherever you put them.

Stations that are not crafting

A lot of "why won't this craft" comes down to using the wrong block. These each do something a crafting grid cannot.

Crafting table
The 3×3 grid. Everything the inventory grid makes, plus every recipe that needs a three-wide pattern.
Furnace
Smelting — ore into ingots, food into cooked food, sand into glass. Not a crafting grid.
Blast furnace
Smelts ore and metal at twice the speed of a furnace, and nothing else.
Smoker
Cooks food at twice the speed of a furnace, and nothing else.
Smithing table
Upgrades diamond gear to netherite and applies armour trims.
Brewing stand
Potions. Uses its own three-bottle layout rather than a grid.
Stonecutter
Cuts stone into stairs, slabs and chiselled variants — one input, no pattern, and often less waste than crafting.
Loom
Applies banner patterns, using far fewer dyes than the equivalent crafting recipe.
Anvil
Renames items, and combines enchanted items and books. Costs experience.
Grindstone
Strips enchantments and repairs two of the same item, returning some experience.
Cartography table
Copies, expands and locks maps.
Fletching table
No recipes. It exists to turn a villager into a fletcher.

Common questions

How do you craft in Minecraft?

Open your inventory for the 2×2 crafting grid, or right-click a crafting table for the 3×3 grid. Place the ingredients in the pattern the recipe needs, then take the result from the output slot on the right. The recipe book on the left of the grid lists what you can currently make.

What is the difference between a shaped and a shapeless recipe?

A shaped recipe needs its ingredients in a specific arrangement — a pickaxe only works with three heads across the top row and two sticks down the middle. A shapeless recipe ignores position, so the ingredients can sit in any slots. Most dyes, mushroom stew and firework stars are shapeless.

Do shaped recipes have to be in a particular corner of the grid?

No. The pattern matters but its position does not, so a 2×2 shape works in any corner of a 3×3 grid. That is why a crafting table can make everything the inventory grid can.

What can you craft without a crafting table?

The 2×2 inventory grid handles any recipe that fits in two-by-two — planks, sticks, torches, the crafting table itself. Anything needing a three-wide pattern, such as tools, armour, beds or boats, needs the 3×3 grid.

Why is my recipe not working?

The usual causes are a shaped recipe in the wrong arrangement, the wrong variant of an ingredient, or a recipe that belongs at a different station. Smelting needs a furnace, potions need a brewing stand, and netherite gear needs a smithing table — none of those work in a crafting grid.
