How banner patterns work
A base colour, six layers, and which need a pattern item
A Minecraft banner is a base colour plus up to six pattern layers, applied one at a time at a loom. Each layer is a shape — a stripe, a cross, a gradient, a border — painted in one of the game's 16 dye colours. Order matters: later layers paint over earlier ones, so a design is really a stack, not a set.
Most shapes need only the banner and a dye. A handful — the creeper charge, skull, flower, thing (Mojang logo), globe, snout, guster and field-masoned patterns — additionally require a banner pattern item, which you find in loot chests or buy from a cartographer. Every design listed here notes exactly which patterns it uses so you know what to gather first.
Tricolours and simple crosses reproduce almost perfectly. Flags with emblems, text or fine heraldry cannot, because there is no pattern for them — those designs carry a lower fidelity rating and aim to read correctly at a distance rather than up close.

How do you make a country flag banner in Minecraft? +
Craft a banner in the flag's dominant colour (6 wool of one colour plus a stick), then apply pattern layers at a loom. Each layer takes the banner, a dye, and — for the more elaborate shapes — a banner pattern item. How many patterns can a Minecraft banner have? +
Six layers on top of the base colour in Survival. The loom refuses a seventh, and while commands can force more, the extra layers are not rendered. Every flag here is designed to fit inside that six-layer budget, which is why some designs are approximations rather than exact reproductions.
Can I put a flag banner on a shield? +
Yes. Combine a banner with a shield in a crafting grid and the shield takes the banner's design; the banner is consumed. Each flag page gives you both commands — one for the shield and one for a wall banner — because the pattern stack is identical and only the target item changes.
Why doesn't my banner look exactly like the real flag? +
Minecraft only offers 16 dye colours and a fixed set of pattern shapes, so flags with fine detail — coats of arms, text, complex emblems — cannot be reproduced exactly. Each design here carries a fidelity rating: high means it reads correctly at a glance, good means the main elements are right, and approx means it is the closest achievable within the pattern and layer limits.
