How Fortune actually rolls
Four different loot-table functions, enumerated rather than sampled
Fortune isn't one formula — each block's loot table picks one of four functions, which is why diamond ore scales to ×4 while redstone barely moves. This calculator enumerates every branch rather than sampling, so the percentages are exact.
Multiplies the drop (ore_drops)
Rolls −1…level, clamps at 0, adds 1, multiplies the whole count. ×1 stays twice as likely as any other result, so Fortune III averages ×2.2, not ×4. Diamond, emerald, coal, lapis, copper, iron, gold, quartz.
Adds a flat bonus (uniform)
Adds a uniform 0–level on top of the roll — worth half a drop per level and nothing more. Redstone, nether gold, nether wart, glowstone, melons.
Binomial bonus (crops)
Crops roll Binomial(3 + level, 4⁄7) extra seeds. Each Fortune level is worth about +0.57 of a drop. Wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroots.
Raises the chance
Gravel and gilded blackstone don't drop more — they drop more often: 10% → 14% → 25% → guaranteed at Fortune III.
Fortune vs Looting vs Silk Touch
Which enchantment does what, and where they overlap
Fortune
For blocks that drop a different item — diamond ore → diamond. Useless on blocks that drop themselves, like stone, sugar cane or ancient debris.
Looting
The mob equivalent. Raises common drop counts and rare-drop probability — never block drops.
Silk Touch
Mutually exclusive with Fortune — one per tool. Silk gives the literal block, Fortune gives the resource.
Frequently asked questions
Best level, which blocks benefit and how the odds are worked out
Does Fortune work with Silk Touch on the same tool? +
No — Silk Touch always overrides Fortune. The tool must have only one of the two.
What's the highest legitimate Fortune level? +
Fortune III is the maximum naturally obtainable level. Levels above III require commands.
Does Fortune affect ancient debris drops? +
No — ancient debris always drops one item regardless of Fortune. Fortune affects ores like diamond, emerald, redstone, lapis, coal, copper, gold (gilded blackstone), and amethyst.
Does Fortune work on iron and gold ore? +
Yes. Since 1.17 both drop raw iron and raw gold rather than the block, and Fortune multiplies that drop exactly like diamond ore — up to ×4 at Fortune III, averaging ×2.2.
Why doesn't Fortune multiply redstone the way it multiplies diamonds? +
Different loot-table functions. Diamond ore uses ore_drops, which multiplies the whole rolled count. Redstone ore, nether gold ore, melons and glowstone use a uniform bonus that adds a flat 0–level extra instead, so their yield climbs much more slowly.
