How the icon reads in the multiplayer browser
The name and the two MOTD lines above are a sample — the icon is yours.

Where the file goes and what vanilla accepts
Drop server-icon.png into your server's root folder — the same
directory as server.properties. Restart and it shows in the
multiplayer list within a few seconds.
It must be exactly 64×64 pixels. Vanilla rejects anything else silently — no error, just no icon.
Animated GIFs work on Paper with the AnimatedServerIcon plugin only — vanilla freezes at frame one.

Frequently asked questions
Size, format and where the file belongs
What size should a Minecraft server-icon.png be? +
Exactly 64×64 pixels. Minecraft refuses to load icons larger or smaller than that — the file is read raw and rendered at native size in the multiplayer browser. Crop or resize on upload; this tool does it automatically.
What format does Minecraft accept for server icons? +
PNG only. The file must be named server-icon.png exactly (case-sensitive on Linux), with a 32-bit PNG payload (RGBA — transparency is supported). JPEGs, GIFs, and WebPs are rejected. This tool always exports PNG regardless of the source file you drop in.
Where do I put the server-icon.png on my server? +
Drop it in the same directory as server.properties — the root of your server installation, alongside server.jar and the world/ folder. Restart the server (or kick all players and reload) and the icon will appear in clients' multiplayer browsers within a few minutes (vanilla caches server-list pings aggressively).
