Colour codes, § versus &, gradients and §k
What are Minecraft colour codes? +
A section sign (§) followed by one character sets the colour or style of everything after it: §0–§9 and §a–§f are the 16 colours, §l bold, §o italic, §n underline, §m strikethrough, §k obfuscated, and §r resets back to plain white. Configs usually let you type & instead of §, which this generator accepts too — paste either and it normalises for you.
What is the difference between & and §? +
They mean the same thing — § is the character the game itself uses, and & is the stand-in most plugins and config files accept because § is awkward to type. This tool reads either and copies whichever form you need back out.
How do I make gradient text in Minecraft? +
Gradients are per-character hex colours, written with the §x§R§R§G§G§B§B form Bukkit and Paper have supported since 1.16. Select the text here — or leave nothing selected to take the whole line — pick the two ends, and the generator writes the codes for every character. Vanilla clients on 1.16+ render it; older ones fall back to the nearest legacy colour.
What does §k obfuscated do? +
It scrambles the characters, replacing each one with a random glyph of the same width several times a second, so the text is unreadable but keeps its length. The preview here animates it; the exported PNG catches one frame of the scramble, which is what the server-side renderer does too.
Where can I use the exported image? +
Anywhere text formatting isn't available — Discord messages, a website header, a YouTube thumbnail, a forum post. Export it on a transparent background and it sits on any colour, or pick the dirt strip to match the multiplayer browser. For text that has to be live in-game, copy the § form instead and paste it into your config.
