You can see a player's skin by standing next to them in-game. That only works while they're online, only shows the skin they're wearing right now, and doesn't work at all on servers running in offline mode. To look up a skin from a username, check what a player wore last year, or download the file, you have to go through the account's public profile. Each method below has its limits, and some players will show up as Steve whatever you do.
Quick answer
Crafty's database has been recording Java Edition skin changes since 2021. Profiles like Wemmbu's show every texture worn since then, with the date each one changed. You can't get that history anywhere in the game.
Method 1: look up the username on Crafty
- Type the username into the search box on Crafty. Current and past usernames both work, because the search matches name history as well as the live name.
- The profile opens with the current skin in a 3D viewer. Drag to rotate it. The model picks the correct classic or slim arms automatically.
- Scroll down to the skin history. Each entry is a skin the account has worn, newest first, with the date Crafty first saw it. Hover an entry and the viewer switches to it.
- Click any skin to open its own page, where you can Download PNG or see who else is wearing the same texture.
The profile also lists the player's capes, previous usernames and UUID, so for most lookups it works as a NameMC alternative.
There are two limits. Crafty only records a skin change when someone looks the player up or its crawler revisits the profile, so a player nobody searches for can have gaps between skins. And an account owner can ask for their profile to be hidden, in which case the search returns nothing.
Method 2: see skins in the game
In Java Edition, other players' skins download automatically from Mojang's session server when they join. There's no setting to turn on. If you can see the player, you see the skin. Your own skin shows in third person (press F5, twice for the front view) or in the inventory screen.
Skins fail to load in three situations:
- Offline-mode servers. If the server has
online-mode=false, it never asks Mojang who the player is, so everyone appears as the default Steve or Alex unless the server runs a skin plugin that fetches textures by name. - Cracked or unauthenticated clients. They cause the same problem from the other side.
- Mojang's texture server is down. It happens a few times a year and clears up on its own.
If a friend swears they changed their skin and you still see the old one, you both need to fully restart the client. Java caches downloaded textures for the session.
Method 3: get the file, not just the picture
The skin page on Crafty gives you the PNG directly. For the permanent Mojang link, look at the end of that page's address. It ends in the skin's 64-character hash, and https://textures.minecraft.net/texture/ followed by the hash is the URL. Before wearing it, you can preview the file on your own model in Crafty's skin viewer or edit it in the skin editor.
What you can and cannot learn from a skin history
A skin history is a timeline of textures. It says nothing about what the player did while wearing them. What it can tell you:
- roughly when the player joined, going by the date of the oldest entry;
- whether an account was sold or handed over, which usually shows up as a sudden switch in skin style at the same time as a username change;
- whether a "unique" skin really is unique, once you open it and check the wearer count.
It can't tell you where a skin came from or who made it. It also knows nothing about the player's Bedrock account, because Bedrock skins are stored against Xbox accounts and never touch Mojang's texture server.
