How display entities work
The tags this generator writes, and their defaults
A text display takes a text component in text, written as SNBT like {text:"Hi",color:"gold"}. line_width (default 200) wraps long lines, alignment is left, center or right, and background is an ARGB integer. Only tags that differ from the default are
written, so the command stays short.
A block display takes block_state:{Name:"minecraft:stone"}, with an
optional Properties compound for things like facing. An item display takes item:{id:"minecraft:diamond_sword",count:1} and an item_display mode that picks which model transform to use, the same ones
the item uses in a hand, on the head or in a GUI slot.
transformation holds a translation, a scale and two rotations as
quaternions. The generator turns your X, Y and Z degrees into left_rotation and leaves right_rotation at identity. billboard decides whether the entity turns to face the player.

Frequently asked questions
Billboards, transforms, lighting and backgrounds
What are display entities? +
text_display, block_display and item_display are entities that only render something: a floating piece of text, a block, or an item. They have no hitbox and don't tick like mobs, so map makers use them for holograms, signs, decorations and custom models in place of invisible armor stands.
Why is my display entity invisible from the side? +
With billboard set to fixed, a text display is a flat plane that only reads from the front. Set billboard to center and it always turns to face the player, or vertical to turn only left and right.
How do I make a display entity bigger or rotate it? +
Use the transformation tag: translation moves it, scale resizes it on each axis, and left_rotation and right_rotation turn it using quaternions. Enter plain degrees here and the generator converts them to the left_rotation quaternion for you.
Why is my text display dark? +
Display entities take their lighting from the block they sit in. Inside a wall or under a roof they go dark. The brightness tag, for example brightness:{sky:15,block:15}, fixes the light level so it looks the same everywhere.
How do I change the text background colour? +
background is an ARGB colour stored as a signed 32-bit integer; the default is 1073741824, a quarter-opaque black. Pick a colour and opacity here and the generator does the maths. Below an alpha of 26 the background disappears. default_background:true uses the chat-style background instead.
How do I remove a display entity? +
They have no hitbox, so you can't punch them. Use /kill @e[type=text_display,distance=..2] while standing next to it, with block_display or item_display for the other kinds.
