How enchanting works
Tables, books, anvils and the numbers behind them
The enchanting table rolls from the enchantments whose primary items include what you put in, weighted by the table weight above: Sharpness (10) turns up five times as often as Fire Aspect (2). Treasure enchantments are never on the table. Mending and Frost Walker come from librarians and loot, Soul Speed from piglin bartering, Swift Sneak from ancient city chests and Wind Burst from ominous vaults.
Everything an item can hold beyond that goes on with an anvil and a book. The anvil charges each enchantment's multiplier times its level, halved for books, plus a prior-work penalty that doubles every time the item goes through an anvil. Past 39 levels Java shows "Too Expensive!" and refuses.
Conflicting enchantments can't meet on an anvil, but /give ignores the rules: the command writes the enchantments component directly, so Sharpness and Smite together or Protection 10 both work.

Frequently asked questions
Counts, conflicts, treasure and commands
How many enchantments are in Minecraft Java Edition? +
43 as of Java 26.2. The newest is Lunge, added in 1.21.11 alongside spears: a jab launches you forward at the cost of hunger. Before that, 1.21 added Density, Breach and Wind Burst for the mace.
Which enchantments can't be combined? +
Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Impaling, Density and Breach all exclude each other. So do the four Protection types, Fortune and Silk Touch, Depth Strider and Frost Walker, Multishot and Piercing, and Infinity and Mending. Riptide can't sit with Loyalty or Channeling, though those two work together.
What are treasure enchantments? +
Enchantments the enchanting table never offers: Mending, Frost Walker, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Wind Burst and both curses. You get them from loot chests, fishing, trading with librarians (Mending and Frost Walker), piglin bartering (Soul Speed), ancient cities (Swift Sneak) or trial chamber vaults (Wind Burst).
Why do books cost less to apply than items? +
Every enchantment has an anvil multiplier. Combining with an enchanted book charges half of it, rounded down but at least 1, per level. Sharpness V costs 5 levels from a book and 5 from a sword, but Silk Touch costs 4 from a book against 8 from a pickaxe. The anvil optimizer uses these to find the cheapest merge order.
How do I give an item with enchantments above the max level? +
Use /give with the enchantments component: /give @s netherite_sword[enchantments={"minecraft:sharpness":10}]. Levels go up to 255. Books use stored_enchantments instead, and an anvil won't apply a level higher than the enchantment's normal maximum from a book in survival.
What's the difference between primary and secondary items? +
Primary items can roll the enchantment on an enchanting table. Secondary items can hold it but only get it from a book on an anvil: Sharpness on an axe, Smite or Fire Aspect on a mace, Thorns on boots. Items without an enchantability, like shears, shields and elytra, never use the table at all.
