How brewing works

Base potions, modifiers and the four forms

A brewing stand takes up to three bottles, one ingredient and blaze powder as fuel. Start with water bottles and nether wart to get Awkward Potions; nearly every effect ingredient only works on Awkward. Adding an effect ingredient straight to water gives a Mundane Potion, and glowstone on water gives a Thick Potion. Neither brews into anything in Java Edition.

After the effect, one modifier: redstone for a longer duration or glowstone for level II. A fermented spider eye corrupts a potion into its opposite: Swiftness or Leaping into Slowness, Healing or Poison into Harming, Night Vision into Invisibility. Corrupting keeps the modifier, so long Swiftness becomes long Slowness.

Gunpowder turns any potion into a splash potion with the same duration. Dragon's breath, bottled from the Ender Dragon's purple breath attack, turns a splash potion into a lingering one whose cloud applies a quarter of the duration. Eight arrows around a lingering potion make tipped arrows at an eighth.

Frequently asked questions

Recipes, durations and commands

How do you make an Awkward Potion? +

Put water bottles in the bottom three slots of a brewing stand, blaze powder in the fuel slot and nether wart on top. Almost every effect potion starts from Awkward; only Weakness is brewed straight from a water bottle with a fermented spider eye.

What do redstone and glowstone do in brewing? +

Redstone extends the duration (Swiftness goes from 3:00 to 8:00). Glowstone raises the level to II but shortens it (Swiftness II lasts 1:30). They cancel each other: adding one to a potion that already has the other does nothing useful.

How long do splash and lingering potions last? +

Splash potions keep the full duration in Java Edition. A lingering potion's cloud gives a quarter of it, and a tipped arrow an eighth, so a long Swiftness (8:00) becomes 2:00 lingering and 1:00 on an arrow.

How do you make tipped arrows? +

Put one lingering potion in the middle of a crafting table and surround it with eight arrows. You get eight tipped arrows of that potion. Brew the lingering potion by adding gunpowder, then dragon's breath.

Can you brew a Potion of Luck? +

No. Luck has no brewing recipe in Java Edition. It exists in the creative inventory and through /give @s potion[potion_contents={potion:"minecraft:luck"}].

What changed in the potion /give syntax? +

Since Java 1.20.5 potions use the potion_contents data component in square brackets instead of NBT, for example /give @s splash_potion[potion_contents={potion:"minecraft:strong_healing"}]. Custom potions add custom_effects with an id, amplifier and duration in ticks, and custom_color as a decimal RGB integer.
