How firework components work
What the command stores and how the game reads it
A rocket carries a fireworks component: a flight_duration from 1 to 3 and a list of explosions. Each explosion has a shape, a list of colors, an
optional list of fade_colors, and the has_trail and has_twinkle flags.
Colours are packed RGB integers, not dye names. The numbers above are the ones a crafted star stores, taken from the firework palette on the minecraft.wiki Dye page.
A rocket from /summon has no flight time of its own, so the command
sets LifeTime, the tick it explodes on. The value used is the
average a crafted rocket with the same gunpowder would get.

Frequently asked questions
Crafting, star limits, shapes and fades
How do you make a firework rocket in Minecraft? +
Craft paper with 1 to 3 gunpowder for a plain rocket; the gunpowder count is the flight duration. To make it explode, add firework stars to the same grid. A star is gunpowder plus at least one dye, with optional extras for shape, trail and twinkle. Every craft gives 3 rockets.
How many firework stars can one rocket have? +
As many as fit in the grid. Paper and gunpowder take 2 to 4 slots, so a flight 1 rocket holds 7 stars and a flight 3 rocket holds 5. With commands you can add more, but all of them go off at the same moment.
What does each firework shape need? +
Small ball needs nothing extra. Large ball takes a fire charge, star takes a gold nugget, creeper takes any mob head and burst takes a feather. A diamond adds a trail and glowstone dust adds twinkle. Only one shape ingredient fits per star, but trail and twinkle can go with any shape.
How do fade colours work? +
Put a finished firework star in a crafting grid with up to 8 dyes. The particles start in the star's colours and switch to the fade colours before they disappear.
Why are the firework colours different from the dye colours? +
Fireworks use their own palette. A red dye fires as #B3312C instead of the #B02E26 that banners and leather use, and light blue is noticeably bluer. This tool writes the firework values into the command, matching what a crafted star would contain.
