How a name is measured

Four classes, counted by length

  • English word The whole name is one word from the dictionary. Fewer than 1 in 1,000 accounts have one.
  • Letters only Letters from start to end, but not a dictionary word. About half of all accounts.
  • Digits only Nothing but numbers. About 1 in 700 accounts.
  • Mixed Letters with digits or underscores in it. The other half of all accounts.

The share is the number of tracked names in the same class that are as short or shorter, divided by all tracked names. It comes from a nightly sample, so the odds move a little each night. The tier is a decade of odds:

  • Charged Creeper Rarer than 1 in 10,000
  • Blue Axolotl 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 10,000
  • Pink Sheep 1 in 100 to 1 in 1,000
  • Spider Jockey 1 in 10 to 1 in 100
  • Sheep Up to 1 in 10

FAQ

The questions people ask

What does the number mean? +

It is a measured share. We sort every tracked name into one of four classes (English word, letters only, digits only, mixed) and count, from a nightly sample, how many names are in the same class and as short or shorter. 1 in 15,000 means that of every 15,000 accounts Crafty has seen, about one has a name like this.

Why does length count the way it does? +

Short names are scarce because there are few of them to go round; long names are scarce only because nobody wants them. Counting names that are as short or shorter means a 16-letter name is measured against every letters-only name, and a 4-letter one only against the few that short.

Does it check whether the name is free? +

It tells you what Crafty has seen: whether an account holds the name right now and how many accounts have carried it. Crafty is not Mojang, so a name we have never seen may still be taken. The username page shows the history.

Is this the same number as on a profile? +

It is one of the four facets. A profile's odds come from its rarest facet nudged by the second, so a name alone can carry an account into the top tier, but a rare Mojang cape usually outweighs it. The rarity page has the full method.
