All 9 Minecraft Default Skins, and How Many Players Actually Wear Them

Steve, Alex, Ari, Efe, Kai, Makena, Noor, Sunny and Zuri, ranked by how many Java accounts Crafty has recorded in each one, with classic vs slim numbers.

All 9 Minecraft Default Skins, and How Many Players Actually Wear Them

Every guide to Minecraft's default skins lists the same nine names. None of them can tell you how many people wear each one, because nobody counts. We do. Crafty has recorded skins on 77.5 million Java profiles, and when we sorted all 38 million skins in our database by how many accounts have worn them, the top 20 were all default skins. Number 21 is a Steve too, a re-uploaded copy on 74,379 accounts. The most-worn skin that isn't a copy of a default is on 56,021. The least-worn default texture is on more than 11 times that.

The nine default skins, ranked by wearers

Every default skin comes in two versions, classic (wide arms) and slim. The counts below are the number of Java accounts Crafty has seen wearing each exact texture. Numbers were taken from our database on 29 September 2026.

These totals cover the current textures only. Steve and Alex also have older textures that Mojang replaced in 2022. The old Steve is still on 1,563,440 accounts and the old slim Alex on 619,163. Add those and Steve reaches 7.49 million and Alex just under 4 million.

A player who switched from one default to another counts under both, so these numbers can't be added up into "X million accounts use a default skin". What they can tell you is how the defaults compare with each other, and against everything else.

Why Steve is so far ahead

Steve has been the default since the game's first public builds. Alex joined him in 2014, during Java 1.8 development, and the other seven only arrived in Java with snapshot 22w45a on 9 November 2022. Steve had those five years to himself, and for 13 years an account with no skin looked like Steve or Alex. Plenty of players also picked Steve on purpose and never changed him.

The seven 2022 skins are strangely even. Sunny leads them clearly, but Kai through Makena sit within 400,000 of each other, from 2.60 to 2.98 million. Players picking favourites wouldn't produce a spread that flat. My read is that it comes from accounts that never uploaded a skin. Java picks one of the 18 default textures from each such account's UUID, which hands every default a similar share.

Classic vs slim skins

Each default skin has a preferred arm model. Mojang gives Steve, Sunny, Kai, Ari and Zuri wide arms and Alex, Efe, Noor and Makena slim arms. In our data the preferred version has more wearers for all nine, from a 75% share for Steve down to a near coin flip for Noor.

The launcher lists "Classic" and "Slim" as the two arm options for any skin, which is also why people search for "Minecraft classic skins". A classic skin has arms 4 pixels wide, and a slim skin has arms 3 pixels wide. The texture file is the same 64×64 PNG either way. The model just reads one column less from each arm. If you upload a skin with the wrong model, the arms come out with a see-through strip or misaligned edges. The fix is to switch the model, not to redraw anything.

The old Steve and Alex are still out there

In August 2022 the launcher beta shipped redrawn Steve and Alex textures in both arm models, and 22w45a put them in the game that November. The old versions didn't disappear from accounts that already had them set. They're still the 6th and 20th most-worn skins in our database.

If a profile still wears the older Steve or Alex, the account most likely set its skin before 2022 and hasn't touched it since. The skin history on its Crafty profile shows when the skin last changed.

Right after the 20 default textures come two more Steves. They're near-identical copies uploaded as custom skins, different enough from the original to get their own texture ID. One is on 74,379 accounts and the other on 46,353. The most-worn skin that isn't a Steve copy is on 56,021, and a copy of Dream's green-and-white smiley skin is on 44,697. The least-worn current default, classic Makena, is on 1,236,604, 22 times the top original.

So "the most popular Minecraft skin" has a boring answer, and it's Steve. For the most popular skins people actually made, the trending skins page shows what's rising this week, and the skins gallery sorts by most worn.

How to switch to a default skin

In the Minecraft Launcher, open the Skins tab. The nine defaults are always in your skin library and can't be deleted. Click Use on one and it applies to your Java account right away, and you can duplicate it first if you want the other arm model. On Bedrock, they're in the Dressing Room under Classic Skins. If you're going back to a default after a custom skin, the skin change guide covers each launcher and the website.

Want to check which default someone is wearing? Search their name on Crafty, and the skin panel links straight to the texture page with its wearer count.

FAQ

What are the 9 default skins in Minecraft?

Steve, Alex, Ari, Efe, Kai, Makena, Noor, Sunny and Zuri. Steve and Alex are the originals. The other seven arrived in Java Edition with snapshot 22w45a on 9 November 2022, and on Bedrock in 1.19.50. Each of the nine comes in a classic (wide arm) and a slim version.

Steve, by a wide margin. The current classic Steve texture is on 4,440,469 Java accounts in Crafty's database, and both Steve textures together pass 7.4 million. Sunny is the most-worn of the seven skins added in 2022, with 3.44 million across both arm models.

What is the rarest default skin?

Makena. It's the least-worn of the nine at 2,597,471 accounts across both arm models, and its classic version is the least-worn default texture at 1,236,604. That still beats every custom skin by a wide margin. The most-worn skin that isn't a default copy is on 56,021 accounts.

How does Minecraft decide which default skin you get?

If your Java account has never uploaded a skin, the game picks one of the 18 default textures (nine skins in two arm models) based on your account's UUID. So two players without skins can look different, and your default stays the same on every server. Setting any skin in the launcher replaces it.
