About Ancient City

What the structure is, and what it's worth the trip for

Added in 1.19, Ancient Cities are the loot endgame for the Deep Dark biome — the only source of Swift Sneak books, Echo Shards for Recovery Compasses, and the Disc 5 fragments. They're also the only place a Warden naturally spawns.

They're rare — the game places them on a 24×24 chunk region grid below Y=-30, and only inside Deep Dark. This finder validates the biome before reporting a hit.

How it works

The placement rules this finder reproduces

Ancient cities live deep underground — the cubiomes biome map is sampled at Y = -50 (a stable Deep Dark zone). Each 24-chunk region is tested for a candidate position; only candidates landing in Deep Dark survive validation.

If the finder reports "no city" within 12 regions, the next nearest is probably 8000+ blocks away. Use the full seed map to scan a wider area visually.

Tips

Getting a useful result on the first search

  • Bring Swift Sneak III on leggings — it raises your sneak speed from 30% to 75%, vital for Warden avoidance.
  • Wool blocks completely dampen sculk sensors. Pack at least 64.
  • Mine straight down to Y=-50 above the city, then approach via tunnels — never light up the Deep Dark surface.
  • Open the central chest in the redstone room last — it shrieks and summons the Warden if you're spotted.
  • The full seed map shows mineshaft + dungeon overlays for safer approach planning.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask about finding this structure

How do I find an ancient city? +

Ancient cities generate in Deep Dark biomes around y = -52 on a 24×24-chunk region grid. Enter a seed above and this finder returns the nearest ancient city's surface (x, z) — dig straight down or follow a cave once you arrive.

What Y level is an ancient city? +

The reference floor sits near y = -52 (mostly between y = -51 and y = -40 once you account for the building height). The Deep Dark biome only exists below roughly y = 0, which is why these structures live deep in the Caves & Cliffs underground.

Are ancient cities rare? +

Less rare than woodland mansions but still uncommon — the 24-chunk region grid plus Deep Dark biome restriction means a typical seed places the closest one 500 to 3000 blocks from spawn. The Warden makes them feel rarer than they are because most players avoid the biome.
