About Ocean Monument

What the structure is, and what it's worth the trip for

Ocean Monuments — the underwater fortresses guarded by Elder Guardians — are the only natural source of sponges, prismarine bricks, and the gold-block treasure room. Conduits also pair well with monuments: the recipe needs 8 Nautilus Shells + 1 Heart of the Sea (Heart from buried treasure), and the activating prismarine frame is built from monument-sourced blocks.

Monuments only generate in deep oceans — the finder validates the biome to ensure it's the real thing, not a candidate the game would skip.

How it works

The placement rules this finder reproduces

Monuments live on a 32-chunk region grid with deep-ocean biome validation. Cubiomes' getStructurePos picks the candidate; the biome check filters out non-deep-ocean candidates that the game would refuse to place.

Tips

Getting a useful result on the first search

  • Drink Water Breathing + Night Vision potions before entering.
  • Mining Fatigue is a per-monument debuff — kill all 3 Elder Guardians to clear it permanently.
  • Sponges are in the small rooms behind prismarine bricks — bring a pickaxe and a furnace to dry them.
  • The treasure chamber has 8 gold blocks (72 ingots) under a prismarine shell.
  • Use the full seed map to find an island near the monument for a base camp.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask about finding this structure

How do I find an ocean monument? +

Ocean monuments generate in Deep Ocean biomes on a 32×32-chunk region grid. Enter your seed above — this finder runs the same biome-validated placement algorithm Mojang uses and returns the nearest monument's (x, z).

How far away is the nearest ocean monument from spawn? +

It depends on the seed. Default spawn rarely sits inside a Deep Ocean, so monuments typically land 500 to 4000 blocks out. Run the finder with From X / From Z at 0, 0 to see the exact distance for your world.

What biome do ocean monuments spawn in? +

Only Deep Ocean variants — Deep Ocean, Deep Cold Ocean, Deep Lukewarm Ocean, and Deep Frozen Ocean. Regular oceans, warm oceans, and frozen (shallow) oceans are excluded by the placement check.
