What's in the pack
Three kinds of file, all where the game expects them
pack.mcmeta names the pack and declares min_format and max_format 88, the resource pack format for 26.3. Since 1.21.9 those two fields
replace the old pack_format. pack.png is the icon in the pack list, cropped from your first
image.
Each image becomes assets/minecraft/textures/painting/<id>.png,
overwriting that vanilla painting. The game places paintings by size, so a texture for a 1×1
painting will only appear where a 1×1 fits. To make a specific one show up often, replace
several paintings of the same size.
The zip is written uncompressed. PNGs are already compressed, so the file ends up about the same size either way, and Minecraft reads it without trouble.

Frequently asked questions
Texture sizes, placement and sharing the pack
How do I add custom paintings to Minecraft? +
Replace the texture of a vanilla painting in a resource pack. Upload an image here, choose which painting it replaces, and download the zip. Put it in your resourcepacks folder, turn it on under Options → Resource Packs, and every painting of that type now shows your image.
What size should a Minecraft painting texture be? +
16 pixels per block at vanilla resolution, so a 2×1 painting is 32×16 and a 4×4 painting is 64×64. Higher resolutions work as long as the aspect ratio stays the same: at 4× the same 4×4 painting is 256×256. This tool always exports the exact ratio for the painting you pick.
Can I choose which painting appears when I place one? +
In survival the game picks a random variant that fits the wall space, so choose a painting size you can control. A 1×1 slot always gets a 1×1 variant, and so on. In creative, each variant has its own item in the Functional Blocks tab and you can place it directly.
Why does the game say the pack was made for a different version? +
pack.mcmeta declares resource pack format 88, which is Java Edition 26.3. On any other version the game marks the pack as incompatible, but painting textures haven't moved, so you can usually load it anyway.
Do other players see my custom paintings? +
Only players who have the resource pack installed. A server can send it to everyone by setting resource-pack in server.properties to a download link for the zip, along with its SHA-1 hash.
