How Minecraft time works
Ticks, the clock face and what /time actually changes
The game advances 20 ticks a second and a day is 24,000 ticks, so one day takes 20 real minutes. Tick 0 is 06:00 on the clock, not midnight: every 1,000 ticks is one in-game hour, which works out to 50 real seconds.
Daytime runs from 0 to 12,000. Sunset is the next 1,000 ticks, night fills 13,000 to 23,000 and sunrise closes out the day. Beds, surface monster spawning and undead burning each switch at their own tick inside those windows, which is why you can sometimes sleep before mobs start appearing.
/time set takes a
tick count, a marker (day, noon, night, midnight) or a value with a unit like 2d. Since 26.1 there's also /time pause, /time resume and /time rate for freezing or speeding up the clock.
Working out redstone delays rather than the day cycle? A redstone tick is two game ticks; the redstone tick calculator handles repeaters and observers.

Frequently asked questions
Day length, sleeping, spawning and the moon
How long is a Minecraft day in real time? +
20 minutes. A full cycle is 24,000 game ticks and the game runs 20 ticks per second, so daytime (ticks 0–12,000) takes 10 minutes, sunset and sunrise take 50 seconds each, and night (13,000–23,000) takes 8 minutes 20 seconds.
What are the /time set values for day, noon, night and midnight? +
day is 1000, noon is 6000, night is 13000 and midnight is 18000. You can also pass any number of ticks, like /time set 12542, or a unit: /time set 0.25d is noon and /time add 30s skips 600 ticks.
What time can you sleep in Minecraft? +
In clear weather beds work from tick 12,542 until tick 23,459, roughly 18:32 to 05:27 on the in-game clock. When it's raining you can lie down from 12,010, and during a thunderstorm you can sleep at any time.
When do hostile mobs spawn at night? +
On the surface in clear weather, from tick 13,188 to 22,812. That's when sky light drops low enough for the spawn check. Caves and dark rooms ignore the clock: any block at light level 0 can spawn monsters at noon.
How is the moon phase decided? +
By the day count. The cycle is 8 days long and starts on a full moon, so day 0 is full, day 4 is a new moon and day 8 is full again. Surface slimes in swamps spawn most on a full moon (50% chance modifier) and not at all on a new moon.
When do phantoms spawn? +
Once you've gone 72,000 ticks without sleeping (3 in-game days, one real hour) phantoms can spawn over you at night or in a thunderstorm, if you're above sea level with open sky. The chance per attempt is (x − 72000) / x, where x is ticks since you last slept, so it keeps growing the longer you stay up.
