Picking and claiming a name
What makes a Minecraft username valid? +
Java Edition names are 3 to 16 characters long and use only letters, digits and underscores. Every name the generator makes follows those rules.
Does Free mean I can claim it? +
It means no account holds the name right now. Mojang holds a released name for 37 days and blocks some words, and neither shows up in the lookup, so a free name can still be refused when you try to change to it.
Why are short names always taken? +
There are only about 47,000 possible three-character names and far more accounts than that, so almost every short name has been held. Longer and made-up names have far more room.
How do I change my Minecraft name? +
Sign in at minecraft.net, open your Java profile and pick Change profile name. You can change it once every 30 days.
