History of the Vanilla cape

In June 2022 Mojang started selling Java Edition and Bedrock Edition for Windows as a single PC package, and players who owned one got the other free. That left people who had already paid for both with nothing extra.

Mojang answered with the Vanilla cape, announced on Minecraft.net on August 15, 2022 as a thank-you to anyone who owned both editions on PC on one account before June 6, 2022. The rollout started on August 31, 2022 and landed in the Bedrock Dressing Room and the Java Skin Customization menu automatically.

The Minecraft Wiki notes that word of the cape first slipped out in an early Minecraft.net post a few days before the announcement. It was the first cape released on both editions at once; the Pan and Founder's capes were Bedrock-only at the time.

Design

The top half looks like a grass block and the bottom half like bedrock, a nod to Java and Bedrock coming together.

How do you get the Vanilla cape?

You had to own both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition for Windows on a single account before June 6, 2022, whether you bought them or redeemed codes. Mojang added the cape automatically starting August 31, 2022, and it works in both editions.

Can you still get the Vanilla cape?

No. Eligibility depended on owning both PC editions before June 6, 2022. After that date Mojang sold Java and Bedrock together as one bundle, so a new purchase cannot meet the requirement.

What is the Vanilla cape called on Bedrock?

On Bedrock Edition the same cape is called the One Vanilla Cape. It shows up in the Dressing Room, while Java players equip it from the Skin Customization menu.
