History of the Zombie Horse cape

The Mounts of Mayhem drop added the spear and made zombie horses spawn naturally. A few days after it shipped, Mojang ran two short challenges over the weekend of December 12 to 15, 2025, each with its own reward.

The Zombie Horse Cape came from Spear Mayhem, the personal challenge: defeat five mobs with a spear in Bedrock Survival. The promotion terms limited it to one per account and allowed up to 30 days for delivery. The Minecraft Wiki records the first grants landing on December 18, 2025, with distribution wrapping up around mid-January 2026.

The second challenge was communal. Players spawned zombie horses until the total passed 75 million, which unlocked a Zombie Horse Onesie for every player. Minecraft confirmed the dates and both rewards when the challenges began.

Design

Based on a zombie horse's hide, using the patch where its bones show through the rotting skin. The elytra version has holes in it.

How do you get the Zombie Horse Cape?

During the Spear Mayhem challenge, from December 12 to December 15, 2025, players had to defeat five mobs with a spear in Survival mode on Bedrock Edition. Everyone who did it was granted the cape on their account within 30 days, and it shows on both Bedrock and Java.

Can you still get the Zombie Horse Cape?

No. The Spear Mayhem challenge ended on December 15, 2025, and the cape was only granted to players who took part during that window. Mojang has not announced another way to earn it.

Is the Zombie Horse Cape the same reward as the Zombie Horse Onesie?

No. The onesie came from the second Mounts of Mayhem challenge, where the community had to spawn 75 million zombie horses, and it went to everyone. The cape needed each player to complete the spear challenge personally.
