What the structure is, and what it's worth the trip for
A ruined portal is the fastest early Nether access: its chest hands you obsidian, flint and steel, and randomly enchanted gold gear, and you can repair the frame into a working portal on the spot. Enter your seed and this finder returns the nearest one.
They generate in nearly every biome in both dimensions — only the deep dark is excluded — so there's almost always one near spawn.

The placement rules this finder reproduces
Ruined portals place on a region grid seeded by your world seed across both the Overworld and the Nether. This finder returns the nearest Overworld portal to your search origin; open the seed map to see Nether-side portals on the Nether view.
Tips
Getting a useful result on the first search
- Some frame blocks generate as crying obsidian — swap those for regular obsidian before lighting.
- The chest often has enchanted gold gear; grab it even if you don't repair the portal.
- Align the portal to your build with the Nether portal calculator.
- See both Overworld and Nether portals on the seed map.
